What is HHC?
HHC is a cannabinoid just now breaking into the cannabis scene. As the race to discover new and popular cannabinoids heats up, learning about the various options available is worth your time.
First, let’s take a look at the chemical composition of HHC. HHC is considered the most ‘stable’ form of THC. It is resistant to oxidation, UV light, and heat. This is a massive bonus if you’re someone who worries about the degradation of your oils during the storage process.
Its technical name is hexahydrocannabinol, aka HHC. It is a hydrogenated form of THC. A similar process to that of turning vegetable oil into margarine is used to make HHC. Hydrogenated THC, or HHC, occurs when hydrogen atoms are added to the chemical structure to stabilize it.
You’ll find HHC naturally in the hemp plant, but only in limited amounts. To cultivate a usable quantity of HHC, the high-pressure process outlined above is required, and American Chemist Roger Adams created this process in 1944.
One of HHC’s superpowers is that it doesn’t lose potency when exposed to the air like traditional THC. If you want something that will last, you cannot go wrong with HHC.
Does HHC Get You High?
The answer is, yes, but in its own way. Because of how ‘new’ HHC is in the cannabis world, there is not a strong consensus on its potency or its effects. However, most users say its products are similar to THC’s, including visual and auditory altered states. For most, though, HHC produces a high similar to that of delta-8.
One reason for the discrepancy in effects is that HHC has two different molecules when manufactured. One is 9R HHC, and the other is 9S HHC. The former bonds to the body’s natural endocannabinoid system receptors, while 9S doesn’t bind as easily to them. This makes quite a bit of difference in the effect you’ll experience.
With a sufficient dose of HHC, you could experience a THC-like high, however. You will experience effects both on your mind and your body, but HHC is less potent than another cannabinoid’s that we’ll get into later.
So, in conclusion, don’t expect a THC-like high, but do expect noticeable effects when you consume it.
Is HHC Safe?
Because the world of cannabis is so strictly regulated, little is known about the long-term effects of HHC on the body. Also, no one-size-fits-all dose is accepted by the cannabis community, which leads to a lot of confusion over its efficacy and safety.
Some cannabis producers do use third-party testing to ensure the quality of their HHC is up-to-snuff but be sure to look for that in the products you buy to gain some confidence about its purity.
Is HHC Stronger Than Delta-8?
Delta-8 has been big on the cannabis scene for a while now, and a good deal of its popularity comes from its potency levels and its legal status. Since it comes from the hemp plant, Congress’s 2018 farm bill makes it legal to consume.
Again, the effects of HHC come down to how it is manufactured. This same thing goes for delta-8, however. HHC, in comparison to delta-8, though, is considered more potent. The difference between these two comes down to their molecular structure.
Both of them can provide you with a euphoric, relaxing, enjoyable high but to what degree you experience these effects varies with each one.
However, if you’re used to consuming delta-8 and want to try HHC, we highly recommend you start with a smaller dose until you know how it will affect your system. This can vary from person to person as well.
In general, expect a similar high to what you’re used to with delta-8, including:
- Mental stimulation
- Body Relaxation
- A slightly euphoric feeling throughout your body
- Visual and auditory perception changes
How Long Does HHC Last?
If you’re familiar with THC and delta-8, you know that the high varies depending on the strain you’re consuming. HHC is very similar.
For most consumers, HHC and its high last for about two to three hours in the body. However, those effects depend on several factors, including how high of a dose you took, how it is processed in your body, how often it is used, and what other products were consumed with it.
Similar to alcohol, everyone reacts differently to HHC and its effects. If you’re worried, take it slow when you first start to consume HHC.
Since HHC is specifically not THC, there’s no proof it breaks down into a THC metabolite. Therefore, there’s no proof that HHC shows up on a standard drug test. Rest assured, most drug tests are looking for the presence of THC, as well as other substances. Standard urine tests don’t actually screen for THC in cannabis, instead, they detect metabolites created by the human body when we ingest THC.
There’s a possibility that HHC does not convert into 11-hydroxy-THC when ingested (like both Delta 8 and Delta 9 do), which is a common drug test metabolite. Alternatively, if you’re worried about HHC appearing on a drug test, you should give yourself at least two weeks before the test to consume the product. Any sooner than that could result in a positive test result for cannabis.
Is HHC Legal?
This brings us to our next point, is HHC legal? The answer is yes! Yet, just like with other cannabis products derived from the hemp plant, there is some confusion about what is legal, and laws and regulations can differ from state to state. If you’re unsure if it’s legal in your state, check with their regulations to be sure. Laws surrounding hemp-deprived cannabinoids are touchy at best. Verify before you use HHC to ensure you’re on the legal path.
